We are excited to share that we’ve been busy helping the North American Aerospace Defense Command prepare for one of their most exciting missions of the year – the annual NORAD Santa Tracker for all of you, your customers, friends and families! This is an exciting online tool that empowers visitors from around the world to track Santa’s location at any time during his Christmas journey on December 24th – NORAD press release. We are hosting Santa Tracker on Azure, providing geospatial imagery through Bing Maps, and are supporting with Windows 8 and Windows Phone Santa Tracker apps available to the public.

In previous years, NORAD partnered with Google on the Santa Tracker effort, specifically for hosting and guiding visitors through Google Maps imagery. So in addition to being a great consumer story with Bing maps and our Santa Tracker apps, we now have the opportunity to showcase Azure and Bing capabilities. It represents a competitive win away from Google and an opportunity to further differentiate Microsoft cloud scalability. Azure’s ability to scale on December 24th, when nearly 25 million hits are expected on the NORAD Santa Tracker website as Santa’s travels are tracked on Bing Maps, could pave the way for significant business opportunities within the defense and public safety communities, most notably in support of NORAD NORTHCOM’s Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Response activities.
